Lines on the converted video
Question:
There are 'lines' on the converted video, what can I do to remove them?
Answer:
Some DVDs use unusual frame rates that can result in lines on the converted video.
If you have a DVD that suffers in this way, start the DVD selection as usual, then on the preview screen select options from the menu bar.
Now, select 'Deinterlace Video' from the options list to turn on the De-interlace filter.
This should then fix this for you.
This option will revert back to standard on the next conversion, as it will slow down the conversion and is not required for the majority of DVDs.
No sound when video is played on pocket pc Question:
When I double click on the output wmv file on my desktop pc, I get sound, but when I play it on my pocket pc I do not. Why?
Answer:
Usually this is because you have selected a large output file size, and your pocket pc is unable to handle the complexity of the file you have created.
If you select a smaller output size, the Pocket DVD Wizard will compress the video using a higher compression level, and your pocket pc will find it easier to decompress the video. As a result, this will free up more resources on the pocket pc, so the audio track will then play.
It is also a good idea to try closing other applications on your pocket pc when viewing video, to free up as much memory as possible.
If this does not help, a simply reset of your Pocket PC may help, if Windows Media Player has crashed for any reason.

Profile cannot be found Question:
I get a warning screen saying the selected profile cannot be found. What can be done?

Usually this is the result of one of two possible problems
You have not installed Windows Media Encoder or
You have not installed Windows Media Encoder on drive c:
Re-install the Pocket DVD Wizard and make sure you install Microsoft Media Encoder (this will be offered at the end of the main installation) and select drive c: for both the Pocket DVD Wizard and the Microsoft Media Encoder installation.

The Pocket DVD Wizard seems to remember the last set of settings, and I have made some changes I do not like.
Can I put the software back to how it was just after I installed it, without needing to re-register?
Answer:
Absolutely!
Simply select the 'Restore default settings' option in the 'File / Setup' menu.
The Pocket DVD Wizard will restart, and all saved settings, with the exception of your registration information will be reset to the 'just installed' state.
Stage 1 is not completing Question:
When I backup a DVD, Stage 1 does not complete the whole DVD.What can I do?
Answer:
Start the DVD that you have problems with, and select the track as you would normally.
Then when the preview is active, click on the options tab and select 'Global Input Settings'.
A new screen should appear with a lot of options. At the top right of this screen you should see a check box, with the label 'Additional Compression (Force 24 Hz)'.
You need to make sure there is a check (or tick) from this box, then click the OK button.
This should then fix your problem.
Stage 2 is not starting Question:
Stage 1 completes OK, but then the software hangs and does not start stage 2.What is wrong?
Answer:
Stage 2 depends on Windows Media Encoder being installed correctly.
Usually this error occurs if you have declined the installation of Windows Media Player, offered at the end of the Pocket DVD Wizard installation.
If you re-install the Pocket DVD Wizard, and ensure you install Windows Media Player this should fix this problem for you.
If it does not, check you have enough system resources by closing down other applications, or restarting your PC and trying the conversion again.
Start backup stays greyed out Question:
After I have selected the options, the Start Backup button remains greyed out, so I cannot continue. What can I do?
Answer:
First, check you able to play back DVDs on your system using Microsoft Media Player.
The Wizard uses some parts of the Media Player to help read the DVD, and usually this is the reason the button remains greyed out, if Media
Player does not respond.
It seems since Windows Service Pack 2, some users have not been able to play DVDs in Media Player, which displays a copyright issue notice, but re-installing any dvd playback software, such as Power DVD etc fixes the problem with Media Player, and in turn, the Pocket DVD
Wizard.
Testing settings Question:
Converting a whole DVD Video track takes a while.
Is there any way I can test the settings I have selected before I convert so I can make sure I have them right for my device?
Answer:
You can select the 'Test settings' option in the options menu, shown when the DVD preview is taking place.
This will force the Pocket DVD Wizard to convert just 1 minute of DVD Video, starting 5 minutes into the selected track so you can quickly see how the DVD video conversion looks on your device.
Please note, this function is only enabled in the registered version.
Transfer to Pocket PC taking a long time Question:
uestion:When i try to copy the converted dvd (wmv file) to my Pocket PC, it takes hours, often hanging in the process. Why?
Answer:
Active Sync and Windows Media Player both offer the facility to convert files transferred to your Pocket PC to a 'suitable' format during the transfer to your Pocket PC.
Unfortunately, with video files this function seems to be less reliable, oftens results in a lower quality output and the process can take several hours for a full length dvd video track.
Therefore, you will probably want to turn this option off as it is not required, the output file is already in a suitable format for the Pocket PC and does not need re-processing.
To do this in Actve Sync, select 'Tools' in the menu
bar, then 'Options'. Select the 'Rules'
tab in the next window, and then 'Conversion
Settings'. In the next window remove the
check mark from the option box to turn of the conversion
option. Then, follow the help topic for transfering files usign
ActiveSync, you should find the file transfer
takes just a few minutes instead of hours. If you want
to use Media Player to transfer the file, click here.nstead of hours.
Video Jitter Question:
When playing the output file on my Pocket PC the video 'jumps'.
Answer:
Try selecting a smaller target file size.
The larger files use a higher bit rate, which some less powerful Pocket PCs cannot handle.
As a general rule, however if your Pocket PC cannot play the file, you do not need the additional quality offered by the larger file size as the rest of the system, such as the video resolution or processor speed will also only be able to play a lower resolution file.
Selecting a lower file size, and following the steps shown for audio jumping will usually resolve this issue.
Windows Media Player cannot convert this file...'
Question:
When I try to copy the video file to my Pocket PC I get the message
'Windows Media Player cannot convert the file to the format required by the device.'
What can I do?
Answer:
For some reason Windows Media Player is trying to convert the file format. This step is not required as the file is already in the correct format for your Pocket PC.
To prevent this from happening (you can turn this option on and off), start Windows Media Player, select 'Tools' from the menu bar and then select 'Options'.
A new window will appear. In this window, select the 'Devices' tab.
Select the device you are trying to copy the video file to (usually 'SD Card') and then select the 'Quality' tab at the top of the window.
You should find the option Convert files as required by this device (recommended) is selected, we recommend you de-select this option and then try to copy the file to your Pocket PC again, without Media Player trying to convert the file.
This should fix the transfer problem, and speed up the whole transfer process.

Working with networks
Question:
I would like to run the Pocket DVD Wizard on this machine, but access a DVD on another machine on my network, is this possible.
Answer:
Yes, but....
You must be able to play back the DVD on the remote machine using Windows Media Player. If the DVD will not play back in Media Player, then it is likely your network speed is not high enough to transfer the data at the required speed.
You may also want to increase the file buffer in the Pocket DVD Wizard to prevent the encoder from stalling due to network congestion.
To do this, wait until the dvd is playing back in the preview window and then select the options menu, and then 'Show global input settings'.
A new screen will appear, check the buffer selection to 'HD' and to a setting af around 100 to buffer a large portion of the DVD video to your hard drive.
